Worthy Cause Wednesday - We are all connected at the heart - Texas Children's Hospital | The Woodlands, TX

Here's another story of some of the great work that goes on at Texas Children's Hospital.

When Rachel and Levi learned they were expecting their first child, a son, they chose the name Leo to honor Levi’s grandfather. In Hebrew, "Lev" means heart—a word whose significance they could not yet fully grasp. Their joy and anticipation grew until Rachel's 20-week ultrasound, when a moment of silence from the technician hinted at an unexpected complication. A subsequent fetal echocardiogram revealed that Leo had a congenital heart defect, requiring specialized care from Texas Children’s Hospital.

Leo's diagnosis led to a difficult journey for his parents. At just 23 days old, Leo underwent an eight-and-a-half-hour open-heart surgery. Levi recalled the intensity of that day, marveling at their tiny son’s resilience. Ten days after surgery, Leo was discharged from the NICU, marking a pivotal moment for Rachel and Levi. “Up until then, we had never held Leo without wires attached,” Rachel shared, describing the emotional release when they could finally embrace him like any other baby.

Today, Leo is a thriving 5-year-old who exudes confidence and joy. He attends school, plays with friends, and adores his new role as a big brother. Reflecting on their experience at Texas Children’s, Levi expressed deep gratitude for the compassionate staff who became like family. “Leo is the beat of our hearts,” he said, encapsulating the profound journey their family has faced and the strength they've found together.
